Symptoms Related to Dog Food Recalls

Below you will find a list of symptoms suggesting a reaction to contaminated dog food:

Many dogs will vomit or become sick very quickly after ingesting contaminated dog food.

-vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, lethargy
-changes in amount of drinking (increasing/decreasing)
-changes in amount of urinating (increasing/decreasing)
-mouth pain or mouth ulcers
-severe dehydration

If you suspect your dog has any of these symptoms after eating a questionable dog food, then consult your veterinary professional at once.

(You can report any suspected case to the FDA here:

After more research, wheat gluten appears to be the source of most toxins in dog food.  Another one is a chemical used in Asian fertilizers, plastics, and laminates called melamine, which appears to also be harmful.

Good premium natural dog foods do not use wheat gluten, due to its difficulty for dogs to digest and it is a poor source of protein for your dog.  If used at all, it will be used as a filler.

Many dog owners have made the switch to avoid dog food from grocery stores and supermarkets all together.  Please....do NOT go back and give your dog any food that is or has ever been on the dog food recall list.

Many of the commercial dog food companies are only interested in making money and not the welfare of your dog, so be sure not to give your dog any food made with substandard ingredients.  These substandard dog food ingredients often contain contaminates which could cause harm to your dog.  Even without the contaminates, many of these dog foods offer very little nutritional value anyway.

What can be done?  Well, here are a few suggestions:

One is to make your own dog food.  It's not as hard as you may think and its actually inexpensive.  Most importantly, you will be able to monitor exactly what goes into your dogs food.

In addition to a good quality dog food, you can also add in raw foods and veggies to your dogs food.

You could also order a premium natural dog food from

The Only Natural Pet Store

They offer high-quality, all-natural dog foods specifically made for dogs with good health in mind.

Interesting Statistics Regarding Your Pet

The FDC states that the official number of pet deaths is 16, many pet owners believe to the actual number to be higher.  Many estimate a more realistic figure is probably closer to 3500 deceased pets and more than 12,000 affected pets.

According to the Pet Connection Database 3,973 pets have been reported as deceased.

Of these, 2,058 are cats, and 1,815 are dogs. Total reports of all owner-suspected cases of food-related illness: 12,419.

There is a very well respected Veterinary Only Website called Veterinary Information Network (VIN). VIN sets a range for probable deaths at 2,000 to 7,000, based on survey of VIN member veterinarians.
